Chemeketa, along with other institutions across the country, is experiencing an increase in fraudulent student admission and financial aid applications. As a college, we are doing everything we can to catch these students, but some will inevitably get past our screening processes. As a member of our college community, we ask that you remain vigilant and support our efforts by implementing the practices outlined below to help mitigate fraudulent student activity.

Verify identity when working with a student

  • Student Services Staff should check photo ID before discussing non-directory information

    • If a photo ID is not checked, then we are violating FERPA by potentially releasing non-directory information to someone who’s identity we have not confirmed.

    • Checking photo ID also protects against bad actors using stolen information to attend school.

    • Faculty may also verify identification if they suspect any suspicious activity

Complete No Show Drops (NSD)

  • This is the most valuable way faculty can contribute to the fight against fraud

  • Per college policy students who do not attend class or make contact with the instructor by the second class session must be dropped from the course by the instructor. Please see the No Show Drop guidelines for additional information.

  • No Show Drops help us limit disbursing financial aid to fraudulent students.

Complete this Google form for any suspicious behavior or students you believe may be fraudulent.

Below are some examples of when it would be appropriate to submit a Potential Fraudulent Student Record form:

  • Student does not have identification or does not know simple information about their account

  • Multiple students submit similar information or send similar emails

  • Students are contacting faculty to let them into a class to avoid the advising hold

Once a Potential Fraudulent Student Record Google form is submitted, the account is reviewed by Enrollment Services, Business Services, Advising, and Financial Aid. If the student is determined to be fraudulent, they will get an “RD” hold on their account preventing future registration until they verify their identity with Enrollment Services.

We appreciate your help with these efforts. If you would like more detailed information, you can view the Chemeketa Fraud Mitigation Plan. Preventing fraud takes everyone’s help, and by working together we can do our best to prevent fraud and preserve our resources for our non-fraudulent students.
