Since we’ve recently experienced weather-related delayed openings and campus closures, we thought it might be helpful to provide an updated reminder of how we’d ask instructors to manage classes when the college is impacted by inclement weather. You are encouraged to discuss these guidelines with your students in advance, and/or include them in your course syllabus.

  • Delayed Openings – Any in-person class, lab, or other activity scheduled to begin before the delayed opening time is canceled. Classes starting after that time are to be held as previously scheduled. For example, if a class is scheduled to start at 10:00 am, but the college will not open until 10:30 am, that class would be canceled. If a class is scheduled to start at 10:30 am, it would be held as normally scheduled.

  • Fully Remote ClassesUnder most circumstances, remote classes should be held as normally scheduled, regardless of delayed opening or college closure. Should the circumstance warrant canceling remote classes (e.g., for example, wide-spread power outages), that would be indicated in the alert message.

  • Evening Classes – Evening classes are never delayed, but may be canceled independently of day classes. A decision affecting evening classes and notification of media will normally take place by 4 pm. Evening classes are defined as any classes that begin after 5 pm.

A note on process

The college will make every attempt to establish decisions about the length and magnitude of closures as early as possible in the morning.  Please note that a decision may be made to close the entire college or only certain locations. That information will be posted to the flash alert website that is readily accessible to students, employees, and news outlets. The direct URL to Chemeketa’s information can be found at:  http://www.flashalert.net/news.html?id=197.

In the event of a delay or closure, instructors are encouraged to post information for their students in eLearn about any schedule or assignment changes. If an instructor cannot safely travel to the college due to inclement weather, but the college remains open, they should contact their dean or designee. Instructors should also email specific instructions for the missed class period to students and are encouraged to post any assignments or alternate class work or to eLearn.

We encourage instructors to have flexibility and grace for students who may live in outlying areas, or have children impacted by local school district delays and/or closures; while most students may be able to get to class, there may be students who live in areas that are more severely impacted by the weather.
