When the current CFA Collective Bargaining Agreement was negotiated, a new clause was added into Article 28 – Order of Assignment, that would provide disciplines and departments with flexibility to create greater opportunity for their part-time faculty to teach a diversity of courses. Programs may propose a grouping of courses to be considered a course sequence in terms of order of assignment only. This would allow part-time faculty to gain seniority to teach other courses within that sequence, rather than on a course by course basis.

The current course sequences that have been approved are: MTH 060 – Introductory Algebra, MTH 070 – Elementary Algebra, MTH 091 – Algebraic Literacy, and MTH 095 – Intermediate Algebra

If programs are interested in developing a collection of courses for this purpose, please follow the request and approval process outlined below.

Request & Approval Process

  1. During a program meeting, a faculty member may present for faculty approval a collection of courses to be designated as a sequence. The courses in the proposed sequence should all require the same instructor qualifications.
  2. Once approved by the program, the sequence will be recommended for review and approval by the pertinent academic program dean.
  3. Discussion should occur between the program chair and academic program dean to strengthen the request for designation as a sequence.
  4. Academic program dean presents an approved electronic copy to the Faculty Contract Management team (see list below) and to the Executive Dean who supervises the program with the proposed sequence, by the end of spring term. For 2025, proposals are due from academic program deans to the faculty contract management team by Friday, June 6, 2025.
  5. A contract management team meeting will be scheduled the week after spring term where the course sequence will be added to the list by a MOU. At this point, the program will be notified that the course sequence is officially recognized by the College and by the CFA, effective summer term.
  6. In subsequent contract negotiations, the list of course sequences will be updated in the contract.

Seniority would begin to accrue in any new approved course sequences starting summer 2025.
