Recognizing Concerning Behavior
Faculty may be in a critical position to notice when an individual might benefit from additional support. Referrals should be made if you’re observing students displaying academic, physical, emotional, risky/dangerous behaviors, or noticing that “something seems off.” Click HERE for a full list of example behavioral indicators. Generally, indicators may be:
-
Marked changes in academic performance or behavior
-
Physical changes such as appearance or alertness
-
Social withdrawal
-
Strange behaviors & Impaired thinking
-
Exaggerated emotional responses
-
Threatening Statements and Behaviors
Referrals should also be made if a student has violated the Student Code of Conduct and Community Standards of Civility, Accountability, Academic Honesty and Personal Integrity. Examples may be:
-
Engaging in harassment
-
Disrupting the learning environment
How to Report Concerning Behavior
The Student Concern Referral/Reporting Form should be the primary method for reporting non-emergency concerning behavior and violations of the Student Code of Conduct. If you call for emergency or immediate services such as Counseling and Student Support, Public Safety, or Emergency Services, please send a follow-up referral through the reporting form as soon as possible.
The Reporting form is automatically received by the Student Affairs Office. The link to the form is also located on the Faculty Commons page on MyChemeketa. For questions about the Code of Conduct, you may contact katie.rallojay@chemeketa.edu.
What Happens Next
This graph depicts possible outcomes for a referral. Every situation is analyzed using best-practice standards and may require a multi-layered approach. It is encouraged that Instructors inform their Dean/Director of matters related to classroom conduct.
